2017 was a strong year for the blockchain energy field. 2018 promises to be the year where ideas go from small-scale pilot projects to hopefully commercial deployment. So without further ado, let’s get to the latest developments from the field!
In one of the biggest news to start the year, WePower announced a pilot project to test the large-scale tokenization of energy data with an Estonian TSO (Elering AS). As a highly digital country with 100% smart meter penetration, Estonia is the perfect testbed to experiment at the crossroads of blockchain and energy.
In other news, LO3 Energy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European Power Exchange EPEX SPOT in order to connect local p2p markets from LO3 with the wholesale markets. Additionally, Siemens continued its support by participating in the Series A funding for LO3 Energy.
It is only a matter of time before we start seeing a wider adoption of blockchain in the energy field. 2018 is poised to become a transformative year!
