Towards the end of 2017 blockchain seemed to be universally hailed as the solution for nearly every problem the energy industry ever faced. Cryptocurrencies skyrocketed and new blockchain initiatives popped up on a daily basis. In 2018, the industry was forced to face reality and blockchain technology had to grow up fast. It led to quite some disillusionment; markets crashed, a shake-out of startups occurred and expectations got depressed. Will 2019 bring us to the harsh realization that blockchain isn’t the disruptive technology it promised to be? Or will the surviving business models prove their actual added value to the energy transition?

|MICHIEL DORRESTEIJN /// SR. ENERGY CONSULTANT - ENERGY21|
|Michiel Dorresteijn (senior consultant energy markets at Energy21) is a consultant with a keen interest in complex strategic issues. With a background in commercial businesses as well as in governmental policy development, he is always trying to bridge the gap between abstract strategies and policies and day-to-day business. Discussing and formulating visions and strategies, but with a constant drive to turn these into realistic practices and projects.
After several years in the business of geographical information and remote sensing, Michiel was convinced that the energy sector was the place to be if you want to work on the bigger challenges in our society. Several years as policy advisor for wind energy development learned him the mechanisms in Den Haag. But feeling more at home in a more commercial setting Michiel joined Energy21 in 2012. Energy21 provides energy data solutions for the larger players in the energy sector, based on the vision to enable a sustainable energy market system. To do so Energy21 has to understand the functioning of and interaction between the different roles in the energy sector very well. Michiel’s activities focus on business development and energy market consultancy, especially on topics related to the energy transition. This includes innovative market models, distributed energy concepts applying blockchain and other energy process software, and long term energy strategy.

We've built up a line of 'Unlocking Solar Capital' events - with editions in Africa, Latin America and Asia - that focus on connecting conventional financing with project development, we host the annual 'Making Solar Bankable' event in Amsterdam together with Dutch development bank FMO, and always include a wide range of financial topics and speakers in all the events we organize. Furthermore, we've hosted a series of conference on innovative financing methods and practices, like the 'Renewable Energy Crowdfunding' conferences (hosted twice in London) and the YieldCon events (organized in New York and London).
Expanding upon this and further aligned with our new 'Future Grid' division, we're approaching the topic of blockchain, which we had already touched upon in several of our other events.
